Our Story

What Sets Us Apart

Founded in 2008 by a social worker in Michigan, Providence Family Life Center began as a grassroots effort to restore dignity and well-being through basic community support. Early services included meals, clothing, mentorship, and resource referrals for individuals and families living with severe and persistent mental illness, chronic homelessness, human trafficking, and substance addiction.

After relocating to Southwest Florida in 2016, the organization engaged local officials and community partners to better understand regional needs through available needs assessment data. In response, Providence Family Life Center expanded its work to help vulnerable populations—including veterans, older adults, and children with disabilities—access essential services, generate income through disability application support, and secure safe, stable housing.

The impact of major disasters, including Hurricanes Irma and Ian, deepened the organization's understanding of how trauma affects both mental and physical health. These experiences shaped a strategic shift toward prevention, education, resilience, and long-term recovery, recognizing that healing requires more than crisis response alone.

This work led to the creation of the Mind Body Movement Living Laboratory, a trauma-informed wellness initiative that makes evidence-informed movement, mindfulness, and health education accessible to the community. Through strength training, yoga, somatic practices, nutrition education, and community research, the Laboratory helps individuals reduce stress, rebuild strength, improve function, and restore a sense of stability and hope.

Today, Providence Family Life Center remains a hyper-local nonprofit dedicated to educating communities about trauma, crisis, and resilience while empowering individuals and families to heal, prepare, and thrive in the face of life's ongoing challenges. By combining direct services, community partnerships, education, and research, the organization continues to build healthier, more resilient communities across Southwest Florida.
